Things to Do
Mzima Springs Palm-fringed pools fed by Kilimanjaro's meltwater, filtered through volcanic rock and astonishingly clear. Walk the nature trail, spot crocodiles and monkeys, and step into the underwater viewing chamber to watch hippos glide past. Shetani Lava Flows A rugged black river of solidified lava, about 200 years old and still largely bare of plants. The Swahili name means "devil", and local legend adds to the atmosphere. Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary A protected area where black rhinos are safeguarded and monitored. It's one of the best chances in the Tsavo ecosystem to see this endangered species. Chaimu Crater & Lava Viewpoints Climb a volcanic cone for sweeping views across the park to the Chyulu Hills and, on a clear day, Kilimanjaro's snowy summit. Lake Jipe On the Tanzanian border, this reed-fringed lake is a birder's paradise, with elephants and hippos at the water's edge and Kilimanjaro looming behind. How many days do I need?
Two nights is ideal, with time for Mzima Springs, the lava flows and a couple of game drives. Many guests combine Tsavo West with Tsavo East, Amboseli or the Taita Hills for a 3 to 5-day safari
What's the difference between Tsavo East and Tsavo West?
Tsavo East is flat, open and famous for red elephants. Tsavo West is greener and more varied, with lava fields, springs, hills and a rhino sanctuary. Wildlife is a little harder to spot in the denser bush, but the scenery is spectacular.
Can I see rhinos?
Tsavo West's Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary offers one of the better opportunities in this region, though sightings are never guaranteed. Your guide will do their best.
